Hello indoor pilots,
I would like to propose a little game at the next dome session. It would be part of regular flying with no effect on people who don’t play. It is open to anyone with an indoor airplane that could do the maneuvers in the list below. No registering fees. Just give me your name when you arrive or in this thread. I think that with maximum 5 participants it should run smoothly.
During approximately the first hour, participants practice as much as they want. I could answer questions and help improve the maneuvers or adjust the planes.
Sometime during the second hour, the participants will perform up to 5 maneuvers in the list below and I will be judging and taking scores.
The scores will be very simple.
O: not done or really ugly or crash.
5: done, recognizable but not great.
10: well done.
Choose maximum 5 maneuvers in the list below and perform them one after the other. Once the pilot has done his 5 maneuvers, he could go at it again. Maximum 3 rounds per pilot. The best round of each pilot count for compilation. There may even be some trophies ????
Maneuvers list:
Straight flight, constant altitude for at least 5 sec
Roll (more than 1 sec)
Knife edge for more than 3 sec
Inverted flight for more than 3 sec
Loop (smooth elevator application)
Cobra (up 45 degrees, down 45 degrees)
Outside loop from inverted
An example of the maneuvers is on this video: https://youtu.be/29aDYKPER0A
Anyone interested?

Sure. Add me to the list!
Ça m'intéresse, tant qu'on ne se prend pas trop au sérieux ;-)

I am interested too.
Will it be a fixed maneuver list or will it change every session?

We'll start with the list in my original post and depending how it goes, more difficult maneuvers could be used next time. It also has to be transparent for the other pilots who don't participate. That's why I selected maneuvers that could be done while flying the regular circuit.
If the interest grow enough, we could get extra time at the dome just for these who want to participate but then money will be involved.

Sounds fun. I will try.
Have not fly indoor for 2 years.
Probably rusted.:o

Its important to keep to maneuvers that can be done while flying the circuit. At the same time the maneuvers must not be so difficult that they infringe upon non participating members who fly for fun and be allowed to fly the circuit at the same time.

Yew, this exactly what Xavier is aiming for.

The score sheet is ready. I hope the pilots are ready also :-)

Once the pilot has done his 5 maneuvers, he could go at it again. Maximum 3 rounds per pilot.

Hi Xavier, can the rounds be consecutive? I am thinking that depending on the battery capacity, we could do up to two rounds per flight, right?

You could do it the way you want. This is for fun. Not too many rules.

I think the pilots had fun even if they were a bit stressed. They still managed to make it a tight contest with only a 10 points range after two rounds.
In the end Jack got highest score, followed by Hector. Peter got in front of Luc at the last minute. Francois had some plane issue so he was not able to fly enough to feel ready.
The top 3 pilots got trophies I designed and printed. It is what's called a stick plane used to visualize the maneuvers and it also included a 3D printed stand.
The pilots were already talking about the next round at the dome on January 15th :-)
If other want to participate, we could probably arrange it.

Well done, Xavier! Thanks. Congratulations Jack. I hope to be there next time to see the action.
Beaucoup de plaisir et de rire! Un grand merci à Xavier pour cette initiative. It is kind of breaking the routine and adding a challenge.
The plastic pieces on the floor are also very useful!

Sunday Dec 11, 2022 had a very good turnout with 15 WIMAC members in attendance.
If you notice in the photo Xavier placed two rows of plates on the turf. One row for the pilots to stand behind and a second row indicating the fly zone with a 3 to 4 foot buffer zone between the rows.
David K. arrived with a UMX Sport Cub-S to experience his first time flying indoors.
Raymond B. helped David with the inspection and setup of the new plane.
Brian K. has been instructing David to fly this year and Brian's work with David is showing good results. He flew quite well.
Xavier put a lot of time, effort and energy into the flying contest he organized.
He made score cards and set up plates on the opposite side of the field to indicate the start and end where the maneuvers where to take place.
The contest did not interfere with the other planes that were flying the pattern at the same time.
At the end of the two hour session at Dome Xavier handed out a 3D printed trophy to the members that participated.
A great effort by Xavier. Thanks.

Every time I post a photo taken with an iPhone it is upside down. Does anyone know how to get around this issue?
Tried to edit the post and rotate the photo but it is only possible to edit the text.
I tried rotating the camera by taking 3 photos. One upright, one sideways to the left and one sideways to the right.

Theirs a little file that is hidden which tells how the photo is to be displayed.
Try taking pictures and videos in landscape mode, with the volume buttons pointing down.
How do you transfer your photos to the PC which you use for uploading?

The photo was taken in landscape mode since the last photo posted a few weeks ago was taken in portrait mode and displayed upside down.
This time two photos were taken in landscape mode, one with the volume button pointing down the other one with the volume button pointing up. The photos show upright on the phone so you don't know which way the volume button was pointing.
The photo was e-mailed and opened up and saved to a Mac Computer.
I will check if there is some method on the phone as to how the picture is to be displayed.
