Well I've got myself another gas turbine. This one is installed in a Jet Legend Canadair CT-114 Tutor in the Snowbirds paint scheme. It is a Wren 54 Mk IV turbine from the UK. This aircraft is slowly making its way across Canada. It was originally built and flown by Kevin Forsyth in BC back in 2010. Kevin is on the MAAC Jet committee and is well known in the jet community. It then spent some time in Alberta. It is now part of my growing jet hangar. After being idle for quite some time the Wren 54 came to life with ease.
The aircraft weighs in at 22lbs and the Wren 54 only gives about 15.5lbs of thrust. This makes it very scale, but in need of a long smooth runway. I've been having some difficulty finding a club to fly at. I tried a long grass strip at CLUB MODELISTE MONTEREGIE ST-CYPRIEN DE NAPIERVILLE, but it was too bumpy and could get me into trouble by taking off before reaching adequate speed. Not to mention the debris that was managed to get sucked in and stuck on the FOD screen. I requested membership at two local clubs, Jetfun and Aircalm. Both have capped memberships. Aircalm is willing to allow me to fly occasionally, but do not want me to maiden the jet at their field. They are close to the Lachute airport and any incidents are trouble for them and they don't want the risk of a maiden. Once maidened they would be ok if I join them occasionally as a visitor. The search continued, this time looking west. I've contacted the folks at Phelan RC club and will most likely be joining their club. They allow turbine aircraft and have several members that fly jets. In speaking with Richard Dalpé, who is chair of their turbine committee, suggested I go to the New England Jet Rally this Friday thru Sunday. I contacted them and Friday is closed to spectators. This is when all maiden flights take place. Going to head there for the weekend! Wish me luck! http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/12/f7a3098f801773733318df00b59ece9f.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/12/9f1eaa8e273cb240369f7f6f409c7c85.jpg

Did some taxi testing at WIMAC and had some turbine trouble. It is also very bumpy! I spent quite a bit of time working on the jet today. I've gone over everything and repositioned the wiring. Made sure to properly separate the RPM wire from the others to ensure no interference. Also made sure it is clear of the FOD screen which has been known to cause bad RPM readings. Used the split plastic wire protectors for cars to provide abrasion resistance. The fibreglass intake is very rough and sharp.
The NiCd turbine battery is fine, but wasn't properly charged the day we were out at WIMAC. I've cycled it several times and I've got more capacity than the pack is rated for. I don't think this was the cause of the flameouts. I'm pretty sure I had air in the air trap and it was enough to make it hesitate or flameout.
I put a little bit of silicone lube on the brakes to make them less abrupt and less resistance. Properly tightened the nose gear also.

No barbell, but a fair bit of lead weight up front.
The pilot stays on the ground for now. I've thought about adding a pilot. Might do a scale cockpit with pilot.

It was a fantastic weekend! Still had turbine woes but lots of good advice. Friday's attempt at a maiden ended with flameout on takeoff run, still on the ground. Made some changes to the air trap and safety wired some fittings to be certain no air leaks. They allowed me to try again Saturday morning early before flying session started. Turbine was running fine on ground so I decided it was good to go. Takeoff was uneventful and very minor trim required. It flies fantastic! After four circuits up high, I made a lower pass, still above the tree line. As I passed the pilot station I accelerated and she flamed out again. I lowered the gear, which I should have waited until making the turn to final, but I was more worried about forgetting than the drag it would create. I kept the nose down in the turn and lined up for the runway. Touched down in front of the pilot station, smooth as silk! Phew! The other pilots and few early spectators began clapping. Did some more testing later that day. One pilot familiar with Wren, suggested it was most likely the RPM sensor and was worth changing. I'm also going to pull the tanks and change all the old tubing. More testing to follow.

You are right Bob, it was Chris Trump and he maidened his Hawk. He did an amazing job finishing and a very clean install. He was my spotter and helped me keep my cool while under pressure.
In total I think we were 12x Canadians! Eight from QC!

My second jet rally this past weekend. The weather didn't fully cooperate but still managed to get five full flights in. Two in the wind on Friday and three on Sunday. She flies fantastic on the K80. Really glad I made the swap. Already looking forward to next year! Here are some pictures and a couple videos. Enjoy!

It was great having my Dad join me. I dropped him in Brampton on my way down on Thursday at my uncles. They both dropped in on the Saturday to enjoy the rain with me in the camper! Glad Sunday turned out decent and my Dad was able to see her fly! We had to pack up early and were on the road by 1:30pm. Quite the drive, but well worth it! Two fellas I met at Lachute fun fly a couple weeks ago drove up just to watch for the weekend. I think they are hooked.
They certainly do move quickly and a spotter is essential so you don't have to take your eyes off the aircraft. Managed some nice large loops, fast and slow rolls, inverted flight, high speed low passes, full throttle rolling climb and one stall turn. Handles fantastic! Can't wait for more stick time!

Thanks Tarek, this is truly the best airplane I've ever flown. You just point it and it goes, as if it was on rails. It flies better than I ever could have expected. Lots of fun and relaxing to fly...that's after the maiden flight was out of the way!
