View Full Version : try the obvious

The 15 year old OS .46 in my Tango started misbehaving a few weeks ago. I had trouble starting it and it would stall when I opened the throttle, especially after the glow plug heater was removed. I spent quite a while at the field fiddling with the needle valve to no avail. Back at my house, I removed the fuel tank and changed all the fuel lines inside and outside the tank. At the field today, the engine still did not run, particularly after removing the glow plug igniter. I again uselessly played with the needle valve and then something finally clicked in my brain. I removed the glow plug and replaced it with a new OS #8. The engine instantly recovered to its old self and ran beautifully. The lesson- even after years of experience, we (OK, maybe only me) can overlook the obvious. If your motor runs with glow plug heat and stops when you remove the heat, try a new plug. If the engine is an OS 2-stroke, use an OS 8. In my case, the old plug, also an OS 8, which was in use for 5 years or more, glowed well when electricity was applied and yet did not keep the engine running properly.
I feel bad for you electric guys moving electrons around with reliable volts, watts and amps. Your aircraft don't even make noise or get greasy. You are missing out on all the fun.

Not only you, all of us I suspect...it is always the weakest link that snaps first.
I'n sure it didn't hurt to change the plumbing at the same time...yep the electric guys are missing a lot of fun...
Cheers
Mind you in my case I've been working too much and flying too little...
The best to you...

Can't do nothing about the smell but with electric you can always put a sound system and it will sound like the real thing:cool:

I agree. There is nothing like the growl of a P-51 Merlin engine, an F4-U Corsair Pratt & Witney R2800 or the deep rumble of a 4 engine Constellation.

Unfortunately, an OS 40 sounds nothing like that, although some gasoline engine may be more realistic. There are some sound effects for electrics and these will get infinitely better with time. In fact, the new 10 and 12 blade ducted fans sound quite jet-like (watch below).

I don't miss the smell, the grease and the noise one bit.
