I would like to share with you my experience with this plane I bought from HK. It’s a Venus 0.40-0.46 glow trainer ARF.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=20973

I think this is the Chinese copy of a plane called WOT Trainer from Ripmax originally built in UK.
http://www2.ripmax.net/Item.aspx?ItemID=A-CF001&Category=010-010

The Chinese copy is really cheap (75$) but also really poor in manufacturing and materials. There is so many things I don’t like that I decided to perform some modification on it.

First of all I installed a real tail wheel from Dubro, the modification is quite easy to do and hopefully I will be able to set up the CG easily (maybe just moving the battery).

The second mod I would like to perform is about the ailerons. I really don’t like to have one servo in the middle of the wings. When I checked the control throws I noticed that the left aileron is moving less compare to the right one. I mean, the assembly is so imprecise that left and right are working whit different angles. For this reason I decided to add a servo for each aileron. I will built a support in balsa and then I will cover with a stripe of white monokote.

Above you see the wing of the Avistar and below the wing I would like to modify (same way as the Avistar).

Now I have some questions, I was thinking to add also the flaps and instead of an OS .46 an OS .55.

- Do you think the flaps are useful for this kind of plane?
- I was thinking about the OS .55 because the plane will be heavier to the original one:
OS .44 => 1.65PS, 1.67HP/16000 RPM
OS .55 => 1.75 PS, 1.68 HP/16,000 RPM
What do you thing about the increase of power?

Many thanks for your suggestions :)

I would keep the flaps since they're there. If you have a 55 go with it if not the 45 will do also.

But try to keep the weight down.

Thanks Kevin! Sorry, I wrote wrong, I wanted to say “Below you see the wing of the Avistar and Above the wing I would like to modify.” The wings I’m going to modify doesn’t have the flaps yet :D

You really won't need the flaps as the trainer can fly slw, but if you like them install them.

How many ch in your TX...You could need a servo reverser if you add flap. In my book... flaps are for heavy planes who need a little boost on take off and landing. Now if you think to exceed a bit the flying weight... build them:)

That’s true, this trainer should fly slow enough without flaps :)

I have Futaba 7ch, I use it few days ago for the first time and I’m really satisfied, it’s a really nice radio! That’s also true, maybe I should try it first without flaps and then if needed I will add them. Actually this plane doesn’t looks really fast but for sure is heavier to the Avistar :rolleyes:

I recommend you do not build flaps. Will not add anything to this wing (flap chord seems minimal) AND you will reduce the ailerons surface.

If you want to play with the wing config, go with FLAPERON mix. You keep the aileron servos only, do not change the aileron span, AND can play with some flap functionality (which will be improved, because the whole aileron will deflect down).

Put the 55 on, then play with some weight and ballast, in order to practice high wing load flying (which can be a step to eventually fly more scale airplanes in the future)

All the best!

Your suggestion sound really nice!! I will post pics of the future steps. Thanks Ricardo!

Actually the Venus (WOT) is fling nicely! I had some problems to take off, for this reason instead to install the engine 2° to the right I center it almost 0° in the middle. With this configuration it fly more straight on the runaway to aloud a longer and smoother take off.

To install the servos into the ailerons (originally I had just one servo in the middle of the ailerons) I built a small "cage" using some balsa profiles and hard wood. Here some pics:

I’m also preparing the plane for the winter time. Using a fork :D:D:D I built a ski to install on the tail wheel. Looks great, I hope will also work properly. Actually I’m looking for a pair of skis for the front! Do anybody have some aluminums skis to sell? http://imageshack.us/a/img132/6650/byg3.jpg

Like the tail wheel fork ski, great idea!

Here's a link for some skis.

Check at Ted's Hobby if he can order for you.

These are the best. I have had them on my J3 since 2003. Also my CAP 232.Great skis.

Thanks a lot :) I will go by Ted’s to see what I find there! The skis from Jay Dee are really nice but I’m considering to take the Dubro ones. They are made in plastic but they should do the same job?

The Dubro ones are very cheap... in both senses of the word. The stabilization spring is no good.

I gave away my Dubro ones, they were a disaster. The Jay dees are simple to install, really seconds to do, where as the Dubro, takes time to adjust and get them right. Plus the JayDees will do for many planes as they are easy to change from one plane to another. I have used the same pair for the last 10 years.

Homemade is part of the fun of the hobby and same time as to put on a wheel:
