Well since I am so busy working and don't have time to do any fkying or go to the club, and since all my multirotors are completed, I started another project. Got to keep busy retirement is around the corner and I got to have something to do:confused:
:D
Is a Warbird and i'm goping full scale.
here are a couple of pics. I'll keep posting as the project progresses.

Nice Billy is that a scratch if not what kit?
zorba
2011-08-08, 08:40 PM
Is not a scratch built but I got it bare so I can finish it my way. I got just the frame covered in balsa.
I can say no more cause I'll be braking my promise.
But this is what is going in it.
Servos Hitec HS7985MG (7)
Servos Hitec HS5945MG (2)
Motor DLE55
Exhaust from Keleo Creations
Prop from Soloprops 20" 4 blade variable pitch Hamilton
Landing gear Down&Locked electric
Gear door sequenser from Down&Locked
Power system Smart-fly sport
Batteries Formeco lithium x2
Transmitter Hitec Aurora 9channel
Brakes air disk solid from Robart
Aluminum foil from Flite-Metal, for covering
Nomenclature sheets from Meister Scale for detail
Total cost when completed around 5K
I'm still searching for a scale pilot.
cheers

I will detail it to the original. City of Winnipeg Squadron, the one on the photo.
Got to go Canadian even though the other countries have nicer colors.
cheers
Kevin Rochon
2011-08-08, 08:47 PM
If you want better colors just find a Canadian who has one and races at Oshkosh or Reno.
zorba
2011-08-08, 09:06 PM
I know but is not the real colors that flew in the wwII.
They paint them those colors to look nicer I think.
The Mustang had a very dull finish mostly aluminum skin, so they added color to make them look better.

did some more work on the FM this week.
That stuff takes time and with some mistakes it takes a bit longer also.
The DLE55 fits spot on with out any modifications, happy about that. The stand offs that come with the 55 are the right length
and I don't have to add any spacers.

The project is coming along very- very slowly.
Today I did the application of the FM(Flite Metal) aluminum covering.
It took me almost 8 hours to do the bottom of the wing.
Rivets will be next but I will leave that to the end until the whole plane is covered.
For the rivets I use the gear from the TX450 I had laying around from my heli days.
Since the teeth on the wheel are too close together I had to grind off every other tooth.
Then I put it on a drill and sanded off the wheel on an angle to get the point I needed.
It worked really well.
Here are some pics so far.
Cheers
I had an email from Keleo Creations about the Exhaust. It looks really nice.
He will start the welding next week sometime.

2011-08-15, 09:17 PM
That's a very good idea for the rivets Billy. I see that you're going to have scale exhaust make sure you don't have any restriction, I paid dearly for that.
For the engine I would suggest to run it in an other airplane first until it's broken in and reliable, you don't want to risk this gorgeous airplane;)
zorba
2011-08-15, 11:28 PM
Thanks guys. I am very proud of it. You should of seen it at the beginning, it didn't look like a plane, well balsa anyway.
I am planning on building a stand first Kev and run it on it. The engine came with its own exhaust so I'll put that one on and give it a go. I might need your help on that or some one that knows about the DLE's.

2011-08-20, 08:14 PM
Thanks Brian. It helps to read.
Well this week had time to do some more.
Almost finished the covering on the wings, all is left to do on them is the fine detail of riverts, access panels and lettering. Also I installed the guns and now I have to cover them also.
After that the rivets.
I thought the covering would be a pain but the rivets take alot of attention cause once they are down is too late nothing can be done if there is a mistake. So, I will take my time on this one.
Here`s a couple of shots of the progress.
Cheers
PS... Question for the experts here.
I want to run my engine on the bench.
Should I use any old prop or use the one I will be flying with?
The reason I ask is because I want to set the max rpm and pitch.
Others did it running around 6800/7900rpm with a 12pitch and got max thrust of 28lbs
Thanks

Very nice work Billy.

2011-08-20, 09:01 PM
Well done Billy, I still would like to know which kit it is from.
A 55cc engine would go with a 23x8 prop should say so in your book. I doubt the you can get 7900 RPM out of this engine maybe with a tootpick, hey on my Fuji 46cc they were saying 10,000 RPm:eek:

You have a nice project ongoing. You said,,, I know but it
is not the real colors that flew in the WWII.... The colors
which you have showing in an earlier post is of the City of Winnipeg
reserved squadron from post war years. The post war aluminum
finnish aircraft did belong to auxiliary fighter squadrons from post
war years. City of Winnipeg RCAF Squadrons during WWII were
Sqdrn 402 aND sQDRN 403 which flew Hurricanes and Spitfires
at the late part of the war in 1945 they did get Mustangs from
the RAF some had aluminum finnish but with RAF Roundels.
I hope this will help if you want to go deep in painting a scale
looking RCAF Mustang which was in action during WWII.
Other units which had received Mustangs late in 1945 were
all camouflage in colors. There were no Canadian Maple Leaf
Roundels then. But yes, small mMaple Leaf insignias on the fuselage
forward of the cockpit.

Thanks Guy for the info. Here's my problem.
Alot of those planes have too much color on them, and since I can't protect the surface with protective clear coating that is why I picked the Winnipeg Squadron.
The plane is all aluminum covered. The decals I can make. The cowl and top of hood all the way to the canopy has to be painted. Since I did all that slavering work to install the aluminum I hate to have it covered.
The Mustang stampede over Germany did help to end the war in Europe with mustangs named, "Big Beautiful Doll", "Cripes Almighty", Shangri-La, "Macon Belle", "Scat VII", "Flying Dutchman," "Old Crow", "Glamorous Glen", "Angels Playmate", "Moonbeam McSwine", just to name a few.
And of the 15,875 Mustangs that were built only 284 of these great WWII fighters remain today and only about 150 of them are in flight worthy condition, So I can pick any of these shcemes but I have to paint them.
I love the alu finish and if you see it up close and with the rivets installed is amazing.
So now back on the drawing board and try to find one that has not too much paint..
@Kevin..
23x8 is fine to a two blade, but mine is 4 blade 20" and I can dial in the pitch.
That's why I asked if I should use the 4 blades.
cheers

Hi, don't know much about your project, resembles the Nosen kit. Closer views of photos says no compared to mine but maybe builder mods.
Break in and balance your engine and prop with what you plan to fly with. I would like to know which prop this is, if you dont mind.

Ok guys after doing an old night search, I came up with those models. 44-73656, 44-74813, 44-73287, 44-63807, 44-72051
If you can give me a hand to make a decision I would appreciated.
Just remember I try to keep the colors to minimum.
Thanks
PS. do a search in Google with the serial numbers and you will see the plane. All my panel lines are done to that model.
One thing to mention is that it has to be P-51 D 20NA or 30NA

Concerning the prop Billy do remember that 4 blades are less efficient then 2 so I would do the initial flight with a good old 2 blade to be on the safe side. The only other 4 blade I saw on a Mustang this size was the Byron Original it was a 24" scale prop(actually it should of been around 26 to be completely scale) with a reduction belt drive system. From the comment I read it flew scale like ie you have to be on the ball at all times it's under powered. You can see one on one of latest MAAC magazine or search Youtube.
BTW nice to ear from you Krish!
Krish

Hey Kev,
I have always flown my Nosen P-51 with a 2 bladed prop (22x8 and 10), but find this 4 blader intersting and will do a static thrust test to compare before 1st flight.
All up weight is 28#
approx 102" wing is a flying balsa forest.
First place 52 cc, more than adequate power for scale flying...very realistic. Overpowering is useful on test flights though.
Will always be my favorite aircraft. I had mine redone in Tuskegee colours.. Of course. never to forget the veritable P-47...which is now mine too.

Started on the fuse today.
I will leave the FM as it is for now, I wont sanded just to see what it looks like and if not then I would sanded with the steel wool.

I know what you are trying to say Kevin.
But hear me out.
This guy (Fred) did a test with a DA85 and a solo prop
Prop 23"
pitch 12 degrees
rpm 5600
static thrust 37lbs.
Now in the air he run at 5800/6000 with 30lbs of thrust
His plane weighted in at 27lbs.
Now he was using the DA85. Iwas wondering what the DLE55 will produce.
This is the reason I want to run it on the bench with the 4 blade pop.
If I use a 2 blade prop the numbers will change.
Here's my test stand, I hope is strong enough :D

Do you have a picture of your prop, did you get it yet?
zorba
2011-08-22, 11:00 PM
No not yet. He cut the blades on the weekend. I ordered a 2 blade 22x8 prop from GH.
This is what the prop looks like but smaller. This one is 24"

wow nice:cool: hope for you it will come already balanced:eek:
zorba
2011-08-23, 06:35 AM
Yes is balanced. Each blade is made individually and is numbered. So, in case of a strike or damaging a blade I can give him the number of the blade and he sends me another exactly the same. pretty good system I think.

Did finished partly the fuse. Couple of panels to go on and she is done.
I did changed the design of my engine stand.
The first one was ok but I had a vision that it would fly apart.
Still going at it slowly.
STill waiting for my prop from Soloprops and landing gear from Down & Locked as for the exhaust from Keleo Creations I havent heard anything from Kelvin yet.

2011-09-01, 07:11 PM
Well life goes on so is my project.lol
Today I started on the rivets.
I started by applying the rivets with the rivet wheel that came in the FM kit. I don't like them they are not to scale.
So, I searched and searched and came up with a 1.5mm hex screwdiver that I used to use on my 450 helis.
The rivets are applied one by one. In some spots the fuse was very soft and the screwdriver went right through, not to worry I will fix it.
The rivets are 1.5mm so for 1/5th scale would be 7.5mm close to 6mm for the originals. not too bad.
the distance between them is 3mm so for 1/5th scale is 15mm a little too much space between them. I guess I have to do them closer.
Anyway this is where it stands for now. Still waiting for my gear and prop to arrive.
Cheers

Amazing work Billy, don't worry too much about the mm it looks great don't forget we are our worst critique.
Where do you get that FM metal finish? The leading edge of my Harvard(Snowbird) is polished aluminum. I did it with trim sheet of monokote but it wrinkles all over your stuff seems to stay put.

One thing though if you put it on it wont come off very agressive adhesive.

How did it work on the real one?
zorba
2011-09-03, 11:04 PM
It depends on the temperature of the engine.
When engine gets hot the scoop opens.
Most of the time is open when plane is on the ground or is taxiing.
In the air is partially open. There are two coolers in there, one for the engine fluid and the other for the oil.

Did some painting of the cowl and the spinner.
More to come.

I started it in June and is going well so far. I've been doing a bit everyday between jobs but nothing too important to post. Just alignment of pieces and servo adjustments.
The rivets are the ones that took most of my time, phew I;m glad they are done.
Today I built a stand to I can take to the field with me and work on the beast.
