Got this email from Dick Murray in New Zealand where he spends his winters.
Thought it would be of interest for all of us.

Hey Bob,
A teenager down here gets an electric model airplane for Christmas and it promptly burns his house down. One of those cheap foamies from China with the motor and batteries already installed. He plugs it in to charge and puts it on his bed and leaves the room briefly. They had 7 smoke alarms installed, all of which went off, and one of them awoke his mother who found flames a meter high in his room. But before the fire fighters arrived the top floor of the house was burned out. They reckon the smoke alarms saved their lives that day.
The newspaper article doesn't say but I'll bet the batteries were Nimh. Needless to say the model is no longer for sale where he bought it but is on other websites. The Chineese manufacturer has shut down his site. No kidding.

Gives new meaning to the old adage "buyer beware".

Interesting story. You got me worried, though, because i just got a 4200 mah NiMh Hydramax for my new project. Actually, I thought NiMh were pretty safe and the potential fire hazard was with incorrectly used LiPos.

One of our members at MRCC mentioned that in New Zealand, they don't have 110, they use a higher voltage, like 220or 230 not sure, I guess that could be more dangerous. also it could be a kit bought like in a toy store, who knows, and they might have the cheap lipos.

I charge my batterys in a ceramic flowerpot. I lie them in there, the lid is a plastikbag filled with sand. If the battery should catch fire, the plastic will burn instantly and the sand will pour out and extinguish the fire, that simple.
