Hello Buddies,

As I have to wait for my next fully scale Aircraft project to come by next spring,
I have decide to to keep my fingers busy while waiting and did start with the making of the F/A-18 C Hornet.

http://images2.photomania.com/888618/1/rad4A09E.jpg

It is a 64in long model foam that I had since 2 years and last week-end started on the sanding down foam fuse and wings. Next, will fill the carves and scratch with white glue and baby powder mix as formula and sand down. Then it will be time to cover the hole jet with almost the same formula but with adding water drop's into it. Apply all with a paint brush and let it dry.

It works great for one of my buddy that as gone with that route in the past. The result is fantastic.

I Will go slow on that project. The idea is to do all my finish and then start on the powerplant install and making my air inlet router and exaust pipes devise. As nothing comes with the foam kit when purchase. I have to do it all from start to finish. That is why I will go slow. It is to keep me busy all winter that's all. But the paint job is really what I am looking for to finish befort winter end. Maybe more,,, will see how it goes ...

I also will re-enforce some area of the fuse and wings. Would like to make all my control horn inside the fuse for better scale view while I photoshoot her when finish. You guy's know by now how I love to express my self into the photography making with my hobby ...

I have'nt decide what colorscheme I'll go for just yet ...

Wow,
it as been a while I have'nt got my hands on that one ...

Since the weather as been crap with the wind to fly my Wildcat here at my home flying base, I have decided yesterday to go on it for a while. So did my waterbase mix with white glue and did apply on all the foamy parts of that hornet. It did dry very fast as it was 33c degrees here at my home all day.

Then got some sanding going on all and made it as a stronger foam that will
no longer have carve made while moving it around. I have already done my under wings external fuel tanks that will be hold by my pilons underwings stations for to be use as belly landing devise. NO I wont inplant any gears or retracts on that Hornet as to be saving alote of weight.

Today will do a second pass with the waterbase white glue. I use more water then glue so as to be apply less weight on the surfaces. And also will do my first waterbase and white glue on the external fuel tanks today and will include doing the pilons stations too.

It is a very slow build as I have to figure all. When I did purchase that kit years a go it was only the foam structure sold. That is why it is a side line project till finish. But I will shure try to finish it up for next summer year season to fly off my club.

It should be a great EDF to fly off with. The main issue will be to find the appropriated powerplant for it thats all !!!

LAMAHORSE
2010-11-09, 09:20 AM
Okay,

I have let go the idea to make this Hornet flying.
As I would need to make all the EDF route in there and there is
no sense to go any other way.

So I have decide that this Hornet will be use to practice my painting abilities.
And will be using this Hornet to display in my basement office corner on a
large wall made for it. I will show you later what the wall will look like
with the Hornet on it later.

The office wall will be a display of the USNAVY routes and will also inplant
some other add-on's to make it as a honor wall for all USNAVY Squadrons.

Later this Hornet will follow me while I will do conferences at some major school by next year if all goes well for me in that education route career
I have plan for my self ...

Will keep you guy's posted on the making of that static display.

Will start on the Hornet today!

First, glue all the parts together so I have a one piece Hornet to work with.
The I will prime the Hornet and see what color scheme will be apply later.

I have a fiew color scheme I would like to do. But be my guess if you feel like it to display your favored Hornet "C" type model you would like me to see,,, and maybe do as color scheme.

Hope to see many photographies on this thread from your
favored C model Hornet soon here guy's !!!

I'll have fun that's for shure ...
Till later ,, keep them flying !!

Yesterday,

I have join the 4 main parts of the fuse.
Done the elevator to be removable and did inplant a dowell in alumi in there.

Today,
will join the 2 large parts fo the front and rear end fuse together. Then
will work my way with the wings to be inplant. But befort I will work my
weapons pilons stations under the wings and fix them good.

More to come soon ...

Okay BH,
I will upload photographies.

This morning maybe if I have time ...

Yesterday,

Glue the 2 parts fuse together.

Did inpant at wings tip's the 2x AIM9 sidewinder.
Will have to do winglet on those.

Last was to fit the wings to the fuse for proper fit
befort I glue them today or soon by tomorow.
Wow, that Hornet will look so cool as display static.

Little space to work on the Hornet in my working bench area now.
As I have the Mitchell on the other bench next to it and will also
be start soon.

All should be going fine as it is now ...

Okay

here it goes,
with the photographies on the making Hornet static model.

I glue all with silicone and that works fine and give us the time
to proper place our parts in a ease.

First was to inplant a alumi dowell so the elevator come off easely.

The Hornet in a vertical position with wings on but not glue yet
but did inplant small balsa to make them tight and fit befort glue
it all together.

The working bench area in my home basement.
Yea, it's getting smaller and smaller with those large models I have now ,, lol ...

Not my last large models I will do that's for shure ...
Also notice the Mitchell that will be on the start very soon !!

Got to join,

the 2 wings together and had a balsa at the under wings fuse making a join to make a strong holding for the wings to be hold safely while fuel tanks and weapons load station pilons will be adding little weight and all will be safe and secure.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_BhvWdPzxymA/TN0NcdEoyUI/AAAAAAAAJH4/I7zu_sQ1Et0/s512/Picture%20028.jpg

Also got the color safe foam paint that I will do the color scheme of my New display static Hornet.

Today,
I will sand all Hornet then apply a other coat of (White glue Lepage mix with Water formula) as a protection to the foam and will make it even stronger.

Then sanding down again the Hornet ...

Yea BH,
a clean Officer Mess Buddy ,, lol ,,

a real mess, but I try to keep it as clean as possible.
Very hard while your getting ready to build large models around.
I have a real good understanding Mother to keep me smiling. lol ...

Okay yesterday,

Got the Hornet hanging at the celling and got to do
a 2 time pass with the white Lepage glue and water mix base.
Betwen the 2 applications I have let it dry good. Then got my
second application and let it dry again till cure.

Got to apply also that glue mixing on my weapons pilon stations
and external fuel tanks, elevator and AIM9 that are glue already on the model.

I will use for the weapons pilon station some magnet's to hold them there under the wings.

Today,
I will apply a one last application of the Lepage and water mix to the hole model. Then it should be good for primer next step later. I have to mention that I have done a sanding light pass befort doing more Lepage glue and water mix from my last application.

Now it is ready for one more pass and will be fine and ready for me.

PaulG-rc
2010-11-13, 08:01 AM
You mention the glue water mix but do you add the baby powder too, thats part of the recepy ,that fills in the small pin holes and scratch grooves.

LAMAHORSE
2010-11-13, 08:56 AM
Your right Paul,

I have done that a fiew weeks a go.
Now the last 3 coat's were only water and Lepage mix.

Today if all goes in schedule, I will do the last pass of coat
with lepage glue, baby powder, and last water.

That should give the model that great last finish befort
go for the white primer ... Hope I can prime by tomorow.
Should be able to acheive that process by this week end ,, end's ...

Thanks to have clear info's with this formula Buddy ...

Till now ,, all looks good ...

LAMAHORSE
2010-11-14, 06:21 AM
Now,

the last coat of white glue Lepage and water as been acheived yesterday
and the model is looking good for primer time.

The total coats apply on the Hornet was.

3x times with 25% Lepage glue/ 25% Baby Powder/ 50% water Mix application.
2x times with 50% Lepage glue/ 50% water Mix application.

The Last coat was 80% Lepage glue/ 20% water Mix application.

The MARINES Hornet I am planing to do now:

I have,

done no primer yesterday.
As it was not good condition to do it outside.
Later now, later ...

Presently since yesterday,

I am working my way to acheive the side plate air drifter attach to
the fuse that is located just befort the air intake entrance.

I have also have the,
under belly center exterior fuel tank. Not shure I will had that to the model.
Will see at the end if I plan to inplant that tanks underbelly.

It would look awesome for shure ,,, will see about that one later ...
But I have it ,, so maybe yes it will be on ...

More to be done. So much to be done if I wish too.
It's super cool to be doing that Hornet after all those year I been having it ...
Even if it is only a static display Hornet ,, It will look the best
I can acheive it as scale.

Also,
will try to acheive the round around the intake so it looks like a "A" type MARINES Hornet.
Will see if I can acheive it the way I like. If not, well it will stay the
way it is as air intake framing.

Tail HOOK will also be on my plan of doing that part.
What's a Hornet with out it hey ,,, lol ...

Alote of add0n's will be done ,, even if it is small parts to be inplant.
I will do what ever I feel it need to be on ...

I'm also working on the search info's with my buddy at NASA on that model
I want to color scheme paint that special one, and he mite be able to help.
Paul is also looking for those info's for me as I search the net and I have'nt
found decent photographies about it.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3585/3374965213_8259cb5453.jpg

If no info's in photographies are available ,,
I will get back to some buddies MARINES Officers jockey's that mite have them.

As Paul saying,
where there is a will ,, there is hope ,,, lol ...

Here it goes,

yesterday got going in the intake route and design to replroduce the " F/A-18 A-C" type intake route.

I have not finish the making of the intake yet. I also made on the fuse the air deflector in alumi and will be glue later.

Now next step,
will be to make some foam parts all around that intake to make it fit nicely and smooth. Will do also the tailHOOK and inplant in proper location.

All should come to be soon be ready for primer.

Thanks Paul !!

Yesterday,,
did work on my intake towards the Hornet A/C type route.

I was going to do it with foam material to complet the shape.
But came out with a other solution that suite me better on the making shape.

I have use some foamy flexible sheets that I had in my supply since over a year a go that I did at that time purchase at the dollar store. Yea, we find all we need there at time for our hobby making. You just need a little imagination to come up with a a great idea with those articles you find in that store.

As it is very lite as weight and are highly flexible I have decide to build the intake shape with those foamy sheet material parts.

All when very well on the shape making, as the process is to apply a one sheet over the other like a sandwich and made 5 slice pass of that material to come to the right size and shape. I did glue all those sheets with silicone and all came out as easy result as 1,2,3 ...

Today will start on the shaping intake edges and do some nice and smooth edges on there. I will be using the same flexible foamy sheet to acheive them and will also be doing the engins side exterior panel that will be join on the fuse with that shaping curve later.

The Hornet "A/C" type intake on the making:

Thanks BH,
Always trying to be as easy as 123 ... lol ...

Yesterday,

Was testing some ways to complet the intake base making.

Did try with alumi plate and did'nt fit my need.
Then did try also some alumi tape, and did'nt pass the test ider.

The I found out that I had some old tape roll of brown paper
and decide to try it out to complet the base intake making.
I have read someone in the past doing his covering on foam aircrafts with that material.

So it was a first time for me ,, and will not be the last as it work so well.
Did complet the 2 intakes panel that way.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_BhvWdPzxymA/TOZJUo2p2EI/AAAAAAAAJLg/Ww6tXOEQIcc/s720/Picture%20102.jpg

First thing,

I did apply a final stripe of that flexible foamy sheet on each intake exterior side to make the curves as smooth as I could to the side of the fuse. Then I silicone the flexible foamy sheet. After that I have apply white glue all over that last flexible foamy sheet and took the brown paper and did apply Lepage white glue on the side that will be attach to the foamy sheet.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_BhvWdPzxymA/TOZJX84BfsI/AAAAAAAAJLk/UKH8ccFh81k/s720/Picture%20103.jpg

Then more Lepage white glue was apply all over the brown paper tape to come wet and easy to brush and getting all the curves right. I did this to the other side intake also and got the same result.

After the first layer of brown paper as been dry,
I did apply a second layer on both intake again with the same way I did at the first brown paper layer application.

I have let it rest over night and this morning it look very good and dry.
More to do on them to come at a great finish ...

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_BhvWdPzxymA/TOZJdYWwODI/AAAAAAAAJLo/fOOdUQBNDzY/s512/Picture%20106.jpg

Next will be to sand a little,

and apply Lepage white glue mix with baby powder and water.
That action will fill the carves a little and will make a smotther curves on the exterior intake panel.

More to show soon ...

After,

a fiew decisions and coffee ,, I have decide to complet my Hornet
engin's Intake with the alumi curving plates I have created last week for a test try.

Decided they will do a better job and did inplant them on the edge with silicone. Then got them to rest for a little and got going on the filling with pink foam cut in small parts and then cut the filling foam and then fill with Lepage glue and baby powder mix.

Did start last night to sand them down and till now they look good.
More filling the carves will be done today to come to a complet finish intake.

The process at present time,

with the hornet is filling carves and sanding on the intake.
Now the formula mix at the moment is very light application and many coat are to be add to come to a great smooth finish.

That takes time and dont want to rush anything.
Actualy the new intakes look better eachtime I apply a new coat ...

While waiting to sand down the intake betwen coats application,
I work out idea detail's in concept for the Mitchell ... Now I have a good

Air turbine intake
have been complet now ...

Applying Lepage white glue all over the Hornet now ...
With a warm up brush it goes easy and that way you don't
add any water to the receipy ...

I should call it ,, applying warm white Lepage glue process.
The warm temperature of the brush makes the glue easy to apply
on the model in a silcky way.

The process:
Put some Lepage glue on a plastic plate and befort going with
the brush ,, you'll need to get the brush in the hot water and then let it out
and squeeze the brush to get all the water out of it. Then the remain
will be a warm brush that you get in the Lepage glue and apply the Lepage on the model.

Everytime you feel the brush sticky while applying the glue, the solution
is to get your brush back in the warm hot water again, squeeze the water out and go back again in the white glue and repeate the process till complet.

Yesterday,

Did work on my pilons stations,
and inplant a magnet to the external fuel tanks attachments that is attach to the tanks. On the pilons stations I did glue with silicone a small piece of metal.

Will inplant a second magnet on each external fuel tanks attachements now.
As one small magnet is not anought to hold the external properly tight fit.
So will do those 2 addon's magnets today.

This should be fine when I will be done with this issue.

Did also add & inplant my center under carriage external fuel tank.
Did inplant on that center external 2 magnets and they hold just fine that way ...

Now will have to apply a fiew coats of white Lepage glue on the external fuel tanks. You know the routine with that process by now ...

Photographies will come up soon ...

Yesterday,
I have not done much.

I had 2 top air deflector that are inplant near
the air intakes and on top of the fuse align with the wings edges.

Not glue in place yet. Will maybe do that today.

Photographies soon ...

Since a fiew,

Started on making the Hornet wings and vertical rudder's fine edges cover.
Got my old brass supply unroll and got to work towards my Hornet edges curves and shape.

Very easy to work with as I use a plastic roll tube to soft the brass and slowly making the edges coming on a alive "Fit" in a zippy time. Now the edges covering brass are inplant & tape in place to proper location to gain the shape it will be finaly done and are not silicone yet.

More work to be done on them as it will be cut & roll & shape at some point to proper fit them right ...
