Well the AZM is over. a real nice turn out of 72 members. The planes were incredible. A beautiful Gee Bee with a DA 50 but will be flying it with a DA 85. Paul Burage had his beautiful new Hanger 9 Extra 260. there was a real nice DC 3. The Flee market had lots of motors for sale and brand new kits that went for less that half of the new price. I bought two Midwest scale dashes that are just incredible. The two classes one on electronics and one on doing monokote was a winner. lots of questions and Paul did a great job. Anyone having problems on installing or doing monokote or any of the other makes would of had something to learn.
here are the pictures.

WIMAC had five attendees at the AZM. Dwight, Denis, Jeremy, Ned, and I. This was the first AZM that I have attended, and I felt that it was well organized. On arrival your name is checked against a list of MAAC members for the zone. That was an issue for me - I didn't show up on the list. It turns out that I am registered in the Ottawa Valley zone rather than the St-Lawrence zone. You may want to check your MAAC card. If there is a "J" in the bottom right corner you are all set. If there is some other letter you are registered in another zone. Let the MAAC office know if there is a problem and they will correct it.
The raffle prizes were picked before the meeting started - the zone director, Steve Woloz, had a good system for the last three prizes. He pulled twelve tickets and those people went to the front. He then pulled one ticket at a time from the twelve, and these people were eliminated. Last three remaining got the prizes. Denis won a couple of CDs with photos from the Zone prepared by Diane Chevalier (I have one that I can pass around if you are interested). Dwight won the grand prize, a 1.20 size ARF - he is thinking of putting it together as an electric. As noted above, about $1000 was raised, half of which goes to charity, the other half to MAAC for the field defence fund.
The formal meeting started promptly at 13:30. Minutes from last year's meeting were approved, then elections for the zone director and assistant zone director. Steve Woloz and Paul Burrage were re-elected by acclamation. Made sense to me, particularly given the work they put into the CPTAQ issue with some fields in the zone.
You have probably seen some updates on CPTAQ. In essence, the current situation is that there is an atmosphere of co-operation between MAAC and the CPTAQ. They need to enforce the laws, but are giving pointers on what clubs need to do to get exemptions, where this is appropriate. The Brossair case is winding its way through the courts, so can't be treated as an administrative issue with the CPTAQ, the other two clubs have been doing their legwork to show that there are no reasonable alternatives fo their locations, so hope to get approval for exemptions.
Dwight gave a talk on noise - basic message is that for smaller modern engines you are O.K. as long as you have the muffler, don't remove the baffles, and keep the RPM down with a largish prop. Up to 50cc O.K. with good mufflers and props. For bigger engines you are better with twin cylinder than single cylinder, need cannisters or muffled tunes pipes, and need a three bladed prop.
Denis volunteered for the helicopter committee.
There are 35 clubs in the zone with about 1100 members. The number of clubs is up a bit, but the number of members is showing a slow decline.
The MAAC insurance had a good year. No claims against the policy following a few years in which we had claims. We need a few years like this to keep the policy costs under control. MAAC is taking the handling of the policy seriously - you can't just volunteer to be on the insurance committee. They are always looking for help, but you need to submit a resume showing that you have professional experience in the insurance or legal fields and they will only pick people who have such a background.
All in all a good meeting, and I am glad I attended. Try to make time next year.

Andrew, excellent report of the meeting. Too bad you were not there for the courses. Especially the one on Covering your plane with the different makes of film, and how to use vinyl decals. by Paul Burrage, that part was fantastic. The electrical I hear it was also very good. Next year they want to do the one on programing your 2.4 and also bring back the covering one. plus maybe one on noise reduction on mufflers. Like Andrew mentioned, you should all show up, it is only once a year. bring a plane or a Heli. Worth the day.

Very nice indeed. Sorry I had to miss the meeting this year work called first.
I am surprised to see that not one heli was on display. With Denis being there I was sure to see a couple of his.
Maybe next year.
Cheers
