View Full Version : WW1 Foamies

In the last 2 weeks, I designed and build these 3 foamies. They would fly very well in the gym as the #2 and #3 have been flown last week in a very small area.
The #1 is made of 5mm Depron, with aileron on the top wing only. The elevator and rudder servos are in the front with Kevlar pull-pull. The wheels are made of 2 layer of 1/32 balsa glued at 90deg with a small dowell in the center. Carbon rods are used for the cabane and landing gear.
Wingspan: 36 in
Weight: 160g
Motor: AXI 2204
Prop: APC 8x3.8
Batterie: 2S300mah
Servos: VS9 (Hobbicity)
The #2 & #3 are made the same but with 2mm Depron and ailerons on top and bottom wings. The motor is a Turnigy and the weight is down to 130g.
I will cleanup the drawings and made then available if someone is interested. It cost about 10$ of Depron and carbon rods, plus maybe 60-80$ for the equipment. Would it not be cool to have WW1 combat indoor next year ? :-)
See the pictures in the next message.

I am working on the drawings practicing on a computer design software at the same time. The original drawings were on cardboard. It's coming.

Here is a little video of the Nieufoam version 1 in 5mm Depron. I was alone at the field (around 8h30 pm) so it's not the best video but it shows that even at 160g it is very agile and doesn't fly too fast. The version 2 at 130g in 2mm Depron is even slower but would not handle much wind.

Thanks Stephane,
I had that Depron for a while. I bought some at a model show in Toronto and some we ordered from the states, from there I think http://airdyn.com/ but it seems to be off right now.
I believe I later got some from Icare-rc in Boucherville (http://www.icare-rc.com/). I haven't check with him lately.

Xavier,
If you get to the stage of putting together plans I would be interested in building one for next year's indoor.

Very nice Xavier! It looks like you were flying the patern that we had hoped to do at the demonstration but instead opted for a circle due to space limitations.

Yes Dwight. I wanted to see if we could have done it with the proper space. And this is the heavy plane so imagine the lighter ones. I will try to get a video of the other one soon.
As soon I have the drawings ready, I will post something here Andrew. After flying it Saturday night, I am thinking that it could even been flown by a beginer and I am very happy with that.

I have been busy so the drawings for these have been taking longer than expected to get done.
I was expecting to do very detailed drawings but I have now simplified it. What do you think of that level of details ? I plan to have one sheet for the fuse parts, one for the tail and here is one for the wings and one showing how it could be done on one sheet of Depron 18x36.

I have been busy with many things and I haven't worked on the drawings for a long time. I decided to post what I have and if someone want to try it and have questions, I will answer.
You could see many pictures here that could answer some questions: http://picasaweb.google.com/xavier.mouraux/NieufoamEtFoamkker#
I flew the V2 indoor last week and it is flying well. It is way overpower for scale flying. It could loop from level flight and could even hover... It could probably fly scale on a 1S Lipo :-)
