The original from 1903 was the one were they lay down on the wing. Just a few years later they were giving rides, sitting like on the movie and later added wheels. This machin seems to be very unstable and must have been hard to fly.

For the machine stability I am not surprise because the fact the tail and elevator is in the front it plays as a positive feedback so the pilot need to correct other wise he would be stalling or diving.

Positive feedback concept(for dummies): if you attach a block of concrete to the brake pedal of a car lauch the car at 100 km/hr then just give a gentle push to the brakes. What happens ? The 4 wheels will block almost instantly ,I promise. Why ? Because the initial smooth deceleration with force the concrete block to put more pressure on the pedal and the tendency amplifies itself, so this is positive feedback and it gives unstable results.

So the concept of having the tail in the front induce a bit of such a tendency and creates the instability.It is like: more angle of attack will induce more angle of attack. On the other hand having the tail in the back is more a self stabilizing configuration.
