... that Michael and Greg unveil their next plane.

They have been playing this game with each other... "you choose it and then I choose it..."

Enough!

The Canadian people needs to know!

100 cc's? 150 cc's? 200 cc's? Three servos per aileron? Brakes? Parachute brakes? Smoke? GPS?

110 V. electrical power system?

Extra.... Edge... Python...?

Well I don't have the plane yet, but I do have the motor and servos.
It is a DA-85 so it should be for a 33%, but I got a KS 1090 tuned pipe for it and Jeff at DA tells me that this setup will turn my mejklik 28x10(not shown) 6400rpm :) That is that same as a DA-100(correct me if I am wrong Dwight) so it could be a 35%
Batt's well be 3 Fromeco Iron Corps Extreme A123 2300mAh.
And receiver is a spektrum DSM2 9-Channel Rx Powersafe

I think this needs more Ex Plane Ation to the nation.
Will it be an Extra 260 from Aeroworks ? Do I read your mind ? :D

I guess you didn't go for a DL 100 for a weight reason.
Can't wait for DL to make a 85 cc, can you ?
Are you always satisfied with the DL 50 you have?

No, I'm watching my stock/shares disappear this week, which was going to be used to fund my next plane so I cannot sell them until the market recovers.

Now, this has to stop!

NO MORE!

6400 rpm with a mejzlik 28x10 is about equivalent to a DA100 with canisters or stock mufflers ... but you may want to use a 27x10 because the 28x10 will likely be quite noisy (higher tip speed). With my setup the 27x10 and the 28x10 give about the same RPM (~6600) because I think the 27x10 must have a slightly wider blade.

Sunfly
2008-10-03, 10:36 AM
Just to bring to our attention:

At 6600 RPM. a 27 in prop tip will travel at 530 MPH
and a 28 in prop tip will travel at 549 MPH.
At ground level and normal pressure and temp around 20 C the sound barrier is about 740 MPH
The prop tip speed of our "small" props is quite far from the sound barrier.
By observations I have to admit the slower the prop tip the more quiet it will be.

I did a calculation also for smaller engine and I always get figures at just a little bit over 400 MPH.
Ex: a near overreved Saito 100 at 11000 RPM (Engine limits)witha prop of 13 in. give a tip speed of 425 MPH.
Calculation: DxRPM / 336.14. Were D is expressed in inches.
The result is in MPH

Even if we add the speed of the plane let say a generous 70 MPH the tip speep is still well in the subsonic area.
I am wondering why we start to ear that small supersonic bang at high RPM.
Is the prop tip vortex rolling faster than the tip speed?

That is the only thing I can see. I would like to have the real explanation about this.

Thanks

beto9
2008-10-03, 10:56 AM
I think that what we call "supersonic" sound from the props is really just sound from the high speed prop....

Or maybe a combination (harmonic?) of the engine sound and the prop sound... no engineer here...

Why we don't hear the sound from a large electric plane prop? I guess they rotate at lower speeds...

Sunfly
2008-10-03, 11:05 AM
That popping noise increasing exponentially with the plane and prop tip speed
I would think this is a small supersonic bang.

See you !

bob forest

You get that sound from electrics also. If you watch Xavier fly his pattern plane, he gets that sound.

They put a dot of different colors besides the items to indicate the stock status. Green dotted means you can spend your money...

Michael V
2008-10-29, 09:01 PM
You are looking at the 75cc Yak this has a green dot.
Mine is the 85cc Yak it is at the bottom of the list, red dotted.
I called HiFlight myself yesterday, they told me they are picking 3 of them up today and should have them in stock ready to ship by next week.
That means I could have it by Thursday-Friday in two weeks.
Plus to top things off, I called Wildhare for the wing. I was told they are not going to carry the 84" Edge any more, changing to an 88" version. But they might have some stock coming in late December. So does anyone want to buy a wingless Edge 540, I am moving on again. I am placing an order for one of the 50cc AW Yak's.
You know Albert I still want to see your Yak fly.

What you say confirms my suspicions... they order a containerfull of a given model, they sell all of them and then... let's push another model...

If you a see a model on sale is because is approaching its inventory end...

Who are they?
THEY!

Do not dispair Michael, you will see my Yak... next year. I will use the rest of this year to run the engine (OS 1.20 2C)

That silly Edge 540 .90 got all my attention this year... finally is running OK so probably it will crash soon... and then I will look for parts and.... you guess the rest!

Instrustions are great.
I test ran the motor tonight (it's my DA-50 off of the Edge) it just came back from DA. I had sent it in to be tune-up and have all the gaskets changed, had over 500 flights I believe.
Started on the 5 flip :)
Can not wait to get it in the air!
I well start on the 33% AW in acouple of weeks.

Hi Micheal,

Looks very nice!

I went flying at Brossair saturday(always tricky to land there specially with no leaves on the trees and 90 degree winds). It's great there they have a wood stove and a few guys had brought there guitare so we jamed between flights. But after I went to Ray's and finally got to see his 40% carden, really big, the 30 inch prop looks small compared to the cowling.

Hey Albert
The 33% AW is the other new plane I got. 33% AreoWorks 85cc 98" wing
The one above is to replace the damaged Edge 540.

Thanks Kevin
I didn't know they were building a 40% Carden, Cool.
I know Brossair has a nice setup for winter flying.
I plan to go there a few times before the lake freezes.

Once I got past the motor and throtle/choke servo's set-up, this was not as easy as the manual read. There was some tri stock in the way of the mounting bolts and I was have a hard time getting around this.
It looks like it will be quick to finish now.
I may be testing the motor in a couple of weeks.

I started the motor for the first time this afternoon.
WOW!!!

I turned a 26-10 7500 rpm, And she goes from Idle to a Ripping 7500 in the blink of an eye.
The power blow me away. I wanted to see how much thrust but was getting dark plus I set off my neighors car alarm :o opps
I believe I am going to need a 3-blade prop to cut down on the noise and because I don't have much clearance for the prop.

Later

Michael V

Well I put the cowl on this week.
I also took her to work and showed my co-workers
They all couldn't believe the size:)
And I took her to the feild to run the motor though 1 tank.

I was wrong about the RPM. I am getting 6600rpm
I tried to test its thrust with a fish scale, it was not easy but I believe I got around 43lbs.
I have sent the 28-10 Mejzlik 2-blade back to DA, they are sending me a 25-12 3-blade to replace it. This should cut down the noise.

Yak, nope, that is Michael...

I'm an Extra pilot...

RC-Pilot is correct, customized scheme, direct from Guangdong province in China.

They will send me pictures of the plane as it is covered and painted (cowl) by their professionals. It won't be an "original original" scheme on the top side but so far I'm aware of only one other owner of this plane in this scheme.
